Papers, 1924-1966.

The collection includes notebooks, working papers and drafts for lectures and publications, mainly from the later part of his career, post World War II (he destroyed much of the material relating to his early life because of pressure of space). There are however photocopies of letters written by him to G. Headley (his former schoolmaster) describing the progress of his researches. Hume-Rothery's total deafness required his colleagues to communicate to him in writing. Some of these conversation notes are separately preserved throughout the collection. An extensive correspondence of particular interest exists between Hume-Rothery and Charles Coulson relevant to Hume-Rothery's great interest in the electron theory of metals and its relevance to valency in particular and opposing merits of the Pauling treatment and the collective electron approach.
